#2 - Themes

THEMES

Give a major theme/idea/message of the film. Discuss what you think the film’s point was (in relation to this theme) – and then comment on whether or not you think Scripture agrees with the way the theme was presented. Employ at least 1 Bible verse to make your point. Remember to use the Scripture in context. Again, feel free to comment on and disagree with other peoples’ ideas; feel free to explore other themes than the ones mentioned already.

  1. Finding who you truly are was defiantly one of the major themes and facing your fears, like John Carter might not ever return to earth, and that was what he desperately wanted in the beginning of the movie, but then he learned that there was a greater cause to fight for, and he would kill people if he had to, to get the prize in the end. In the end of our life Jesus is our prize.

    Philippians 3:14
I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

    1. I agree. After John Carter's family was killed, all that seemed to be important to him was finding gold. On Mars, after being there for a while, realized what was truly important to him. He fought for Deja and the people, because he cared for them.

    3. Emily that is a great great verse Philippaians 3:14. He found who he was now and didn't keep thinking of his old self but, looked on and changed.

  2. I agree with Emily, in that finding who you are is a big part of the movie, "John Carter". That is a very good connection, because in the end, Jesus IS our Prize.

I thought another big theme is the battle of good vs. evil. I believe that is the main theme of this movie, as is with other movies, and the Bible. I think "John Carter" portrays sin as UNDESIRABLE, as it should be. It shows "good" as GOOD, and "evil" as EVIL. Psalm 34:14 says,

"Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it."

I think this applies to the movie, in that John Carter is trying to defeat evil, in order to find peace for mars. The movie also shows that evil is defeated in the end, just like Jesus will crush Satan in the end.

Even though it DOES show the "bad guy" as evil, there are some things that aren't acknoledged. For example, profanity and lust. As for profanity, the movie doesn't really show it as desirable, but it doesn't really address it biblically, either.

    2. Yes, I beleive so, if I am not mistaken. He lusted over gold, and the princess, to which turned him away from his mission, I beleive.

  3. I agree with Paige. John Carter was trying to find peace for mars. I think, mars have war too in this movie, and they fight with each others. War, fight, kill, sin are everywhere. The point is how can we make a peace? How can we make a people love each others? We need do good things, not the evil things.
Jesus says love each other, if we try, we can make batter world from bad.

    1. That's a good point, Julie! How CAN we make peace? This is a difficult, yet very important problem. How does one MAKE peace? I really don't know. Because if some people want peace, there will always be people who disagree. Also, God made us to love one another. After the fall, we sin against God and each other. We don't show love to one another as we should.

John 15:12 says, "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you."

God is the only one who can show love perfectly, becuase He is perfect in every way imaginable, although we are sinful. I think that all Christians and many other people hope and pray for world peace. Unfortunately, in a sinful world, that can never happen. But the good news is we will have an eternal, peaceful, perfect life in heaven. I look forward to that day, when I see God face to face!

    2. Yes,Paige. Make a peace is difficult and really hard. It is hard, because of disagree people.
But God always loves us! So we have to love the others too. Also we should love people that disagree peace and God. I don't know how can we make them agree from peace, but i have idea. It is pray! We should pray for them. Pray has power, power of Jesus!

    3. That's a really good point too, Julie! We CAN pray! I really should have, but I didn't even think about that! You can pray about anything, because God will always listen! A really good verse I found about praying is 2 Thessalonians 1:11,12.

      It says:
To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I beleive what it is saying here, is that we will always pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ, and GOD will make them purified in Him. Also, that everything through Him is done for good, and through him, we will spread the glory and power of His name!

    4. Paige, that's really good verse!! Our Lord Jesus is glorified in us!, and He always listen our hearts too. I will pray for our people. Because God always listen us! I think, pray is the way of our peace problems. Thank you for the good verse!

  4. I think that one of the main theme's ws when John Carter's wife died, he was really sad, and didnt know what he should do next. I think the movie did a pretty good explanation for this because when he was saving the alien and the princess, he was thinking of his wife and was basically fighting for her.

  5. I think a passage for this would be 2 Samuel 10:12
Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The LORD will do what is good in his sight.

    1. I agree with this verse. As John Carter started to become close to the princess and the people, he knew he had to be strong and fight for them.

  6. Answering Jonny's question(How do we make peace). I think the best way to help make peace between people is to love them both. Continuing to be nice to each of them helps. When they realize that you are their friend we can help them see the other's point of view can help them have peace.

  7. Ethan makes a good point about the best way to make peace between people is loving both of them. When you are friends with both of them then they might think that if you are friends with the other person then maybe the other person is not so bad after all.

    1. I agree with Ethan to but what if the enemy dose not want to make peace with you or love you back what should you do then. Should I just fight them or try to find a different way to make peace.

  8. I think one of the themes in this movie is to move on. He was a way diffrent person due to the fact that his wife died.He had held on to that memory. When he decieded to marry Deja he lets go of his old wife changing how he acts and feels.

  9. Yes , I agree with Griffin about how we should move on in our lives, instead of “being stuck in a rut” because it is just life, and probably something really stupid. Although it may seem like a tragedy at the time God can turn thing around in a split second.

  10. I think one of the major themes in the movie is making good out of something you don't like or want. John Carter didn't want to be there, he wanted to go back to earth. Up till the part where he saw the red and blue army's fight in the air he had the mind set of... Why am I here, I don't want to be here, this stinks, I'll do anything to leave. And what i found shocking is he wanted to go back and stay on Mars.

A good passage for this is Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understandings. in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."

    1. I completely agree with you Logan. John Carter definitely didn't want to go to mars, especially when he just found a cave of gold. But he still helped the people there and made the best out of his situation.

    2. I agree as well. It reminds me of several stories of missionaries who go through horrible trials and tests of faith in there lives. But God always has a plan for everything, so we should have comfort in knowing that God is in control of all things and that he is guiding us. No matter how challenging, you should always remember that God is in control, and that he maybe be spreading his word through our suffering.

    3. I totally agree with Logan. That's one of the major themes I saw too. John Carter didn't want to stay on Mars until he realized his love for Deja and how much the people on Mars needed him. In the beginning of the movie being on Mars was not the ideal situation for John Carter, but as the movie progresses it turns out that Carter has finally found a place where he's needed and a place where he's helped make a difference. I also agree with what Ethan said. John Carter had just found his cave of gold so he was not happy when he was taken away from it, but it turns out that in the end the real gold he found was in the people of Mars.

  11. I am not quite sure about this one, but maybe sacrifice? I think sacrifice was shown at several points in the movie. One example is how Dejah eventually realizes that if she marries...oh, what was his name? You guys know who I am talking about, that evil guy who wants to marry her. She realizes that she will save her people, and even though we know that this guy was lying anyway, it proves that her love for her people would drive her to sacrifice greatly for them. Another example is Tars Tarkas (I don't think I spelled that right...) and his daughter. They both prove willing to sacrifice their lives for each other, and it makes me happy to watch. It really captures how strong the love of a father and daughter should be. Anyways, I can't think of any verses that talk about sacrifice off the top of my head...does anybody know one?

  12. Sacrifice was the major theme that I saw in the movie. One example would be when Dejah told John Carter that she would die for her city, Helium. She was willing to sacrifice herself rather than see the destruction of her beloved home. Another example would be when John Carter decided to stay on Mars and fight the Zodanga, as opposed to returning to Earth. I found a Bible verse that relates well to this theme.

    John 15:13
"Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."

    1. Ooooo, that's a great verse!

    2. I saw that as well. In the beginning of the movie, he hated others, but when he got to Mars, he saw how others mattered. He started to love others. He would even sacrifice himself for them.

  13. I Agree with Carson there where a lot of sacrifices in this movie. I don't know if you would consider this a Sacrifice but John Carter had just got put on this planet and he was already fighting for an army that he truly cared about.

    1. Hmm...I think that counts as a sacrifice. It proves that John Carter has a great sense of justice, and it shows the development of his relationships on mars from when he first gets there, to when he understands the situation better. Sacrifice or not, it definitely reveals some interesting characteristics about him.

  14. I think that a major theme in this movie is love conquers all. I think this is a major theme because from the very first time Carter saw Deja he wanted to protect her. After awhile he realized he loved her, and he helped conquer the bad blue arm people to save her. In the end when Carter is send back to Earth he spends a lot of time trying to find a way back to Mars to be with Deja, and he finally does. I didn’t find an exact verse that claimed this theme but instead I found a chapter that claimed this theme agreed with the Bible. The chapter I chose was II Corinthians 13, and I really thought it corresponded with the theme love conquers all.

  15. I totally agree with you Gabby. Love conquers all was a huge theme in the movie, and not only the romantic kind. Dejah's love for her planet, people, etc. helped her stay motivated to keep going throughout the movie. Love for your family, or home can sometimes be just as strong as the romantic kind. Although I don't think John Carter really loved Mars until after the battle when he was married to Dejah.

    1. I didn't think of love for other things besides people in this movie and that is an excellent piont molly. Dejah's love for her country was big in this. She did not want to marry that man and make their country more powerful.

  16. I agree with Gabby love is a major theme in this movie. John loved and loves a lot in this film, like when his family died he loved tham and thats why it was so hard for him to just forget about them and not be angery about it. Also he gets to know Dejah and falls in love with her throughtout the movie. Also the love Tars had for his daughther he loved her so much he was willing to die for her from keeping her from getting killed. And in the end John Carter falls in love with his new home Barsoom.

  17. I don't think anyone has mentioned the dangers of technology. Think about how the world is dying, how the Thern use technology in a way that replaces the goddess, how many use technology as Barsoom's salvation. Do you think that technology might be a theme?

    1. I see what mr scott is saying a theme in this could be technology and how it is dangerous. The medalions could make themselves look like anybody of their choice. The dander of that is giving them something that they want, that could result in many deaths.

  19. i dont know for sure, because honestly this movie confused me A LOT! but i think one of the themes is how to love, and sticking up for friends. and i also found John 15:13 was a good example of this movie's theme.

  20. I think another theme was war and I think a good verse for this (also my favorite verse) is Philippians 4:13.
