Tars Tarkas: When I saw you, I believed it was a sign... that something new can come into this world.
The story of John Carter is one of redemption.
What was our class definition of redemption?
Does John Carter find a type of redemption in the film? What was Carter like before he went to Barsoom? How did his experience on Barsoom change him? What things happen that bring about his transformation?
Does John Carter act as an agent of redemption on Barsoom? If so, how? If not, explain. Does John Carter bring about redemption in others? If so, who? How does Carter bring about change?
Does the change and redemption of John Carter parallel the Bible at all? In other words, does scripture praise the same things that the film John Carter praises? Explain.
I think this movie has redemption in it because at the beginning of the movie John Carter was all about himself. He didn't want to fight in the Civil war so he was put in jail. He didn't want to be in jail so he ran away. etc... Everything was about him and what he wanted, or so it seemed to me. When he was sent to Mars he banded together with the princess and the green people. He realizes that their is more in life then what he was experiencing. The people of Barsoon needed him! And he fought with them and for them.
ReplyDeleteI think that he has alot of redemptions in this movie. One how he didn't want to help anyone. Then on mars he was really starting to help people. Also when he gets a new wife. When there was the fighting scene it showed flashbacks of his wife being killed. When he marries her this changes him and helped him get over his dead wife and that causes him to change his attitude to being self centered to liking to help people more.
DeleteI agree with Chris. When he marries Deja he ends up getting over is wife that died. It's amazing how people can be so self-centered when they lose something.
DeleteI agree with Chris as well, except the fact that I really don't think John Carter just got over his dead wife, I think he still misses her. I believe though that being on Basoom and have to fight for something again help him realize that past is past.
DeleteI agree with Chris this movie has more than one redemption,he chenge all his life when he start helping his new friends and the princess.
DeleteSorry, change
DeleteI agree with Chris. A huge part of this movie was the change in John Carter. He went from a selfish person, to caring about others around him. He was willing to fight for his friends.
DeleteI agree with you Alivia, John Carter really was just living for himself. he was just doing whatever he wanted, not doing what he didn't want to do. Going to Mars was for the better, because he learned how to love again.
DeleteThe sort of redemption that John Carter gets is different than what we will get, when he went to mars the first time, he was a copy of himself, But when he went back he was himself and he finally realize his “purpose” in life. He became an ally with the green people and princess and ended up being good in the end, he fought for what he believed in.
ReplyDeletei dont understand what you mean by he was a copy of himself??
DeleteWhat Barker means by a copy of himself is that his actual body was still on earth, but if his copy died on mars then his body on earth would die. It would be the same if he died on earth it is almost like the movie The Matrix.
DeleteYa, like it stated that his body was left on the earth. But a "copy" went to Mars.
DeleteIt said in the movie that if the person dies on earth that there copy would die on Barsoom to. I didn't get it at first but it did make me think about that.
ReplyDeleteWhen John Carter first entered barsoom, he was only thinking about himself and not the people around him. But after he met the princess, he started thinking of everyone on the planet. He eventually saved all of them.
ReplyDeleteI dont think the scipture does because the scripture doesnt praise items or kings. And items or kings is what John Carter basically worships in the movie.
ReplyDeleteI think that this movie has redemption in that when his wife died he only thought of himself and he just wanted gold. Then when he gets married in Barsoom he is completely changed. But when he is transported back to Earth, he is just thinking of himself again and wanting to get back to the medalion. This movie does have it's ups and downs.
ReplyDeleteTry to think of redemption on a larger scale as well. What is wrong with Barsoom? Does Carter do anything redemptive for the planet?
ReplyDeleteYes he kill the people that was in the bad side, and made a peaceful planet
DeleteAlso. Carter has an impact on other characters as well. Consider a certain someone on earth as well.
ReplyDeleteJohn Carter helps the planet. He convinces the green aliens to go and help fight the battle. He is helping the two different groups on the planet unite and become friends. Without his help, the green aliens would have stayed away and the battle could have been lost.
ReplyDeleteBarsoom or Mars is dying and its because of the people with the red flag. They are sucking the life out of Barsoom. Towards the end of the story, John Carter loves Mars and defeats the people with the red flag and saves and redeems Barsoom.
ReplyDeleteWhen John Carter first got to Mars he was very self-oriented and everything he did was for the satisfaction of himself. He tries to fight by himself and solve his problems by himself, but he learns he will not be able to succeed without the help of others. For instance, when he jumps into the green people’s party they all jump on top of him, and without the help of Tars he wouldn’t be able to protect himself. Another example is when Carter’s first fighting the bad people to save Deja and they fling his sword out of his hand, he wouldn’t be able to survive if Deja hadn’t stepped in and protected him. Eventually, John Carter learns that if he works together with others then they can achieve greater things together than they can apart.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean by self oriented. If you mean that he was only living to find himself gold then he was self oriented at the end of the movie to, because he was only focused on finding the medallion. Right?
ReplyDeleteBy self oriented i mean that he only lived for himself and his self satisfaction. I agree with that Carter was self oriented at the end of the movie too, but he thought of others more and their thoughts and feelings. He came to fight with people instead of alone, and he learned to trust people. He had a better relationship with Tars, the dog, Sola, and Deja by the end of the movie, and in the beginning he didn't have close relationships with anyone besides his dead wife.
DeleteI think, the movie has redemption in it. John Carter was so bad guy. He stole the gold and he was so selfish. His life was not good. But he changed. For the examples, the Mars people and the princess made him different. When John Carter met Mars princess and loved her,he start helping mars people and he tried to protect princess to himself. I think it is redemption. Because he changed from the sin. He start helping others, mars people.
ReplyDeleteRedemption was a major part of the movie. Before John Carter traveled to Mars, he was very ruthless and self-absorbed. He tried to do everything for himself, and wanted nothing to do with others. The regret of his family's death left a deep scar in his life. However, when he goes to Mars, he ends up changing his overall attitude of the world. He slowly starts to fall in love with Princess Dejah, and the people of Mars. He defeats San Than's army, and restores the peace to Barsoom. At the end of the movie, we see how much Carter has actually changed. He has much better relationships with Dejah, Woola, Tars, and even his nephew Ned.
ReplyDeleteThat's a really great point, Molly! John Carter's redemption was a big part of the movie, because he had a lot to be redeemed (just like us!). Before, he was self centered and just not very nice. Towards the end of the movie, even though he was still not perfect, he was "partially redeemed", I guess you could say. With us, we are sinful and wretched, but we can redeem outselves with God, and ONLY with God. When God comes and saves us, and heaven meets earth, we will be "fully redeemed"! I think we all look forward to that day!
DeleteBefore John Carter Is tranported to Barsoom he is a pretty bad dude. It sort of seems like he hates life. We find out later that his wife and daughter were killed in a house fire and I'm pretty sure he thought it was his fault. He had a lot of gulit on his shoulders. But when he is on Barsoom he, starts to relize that he can't change what happened in the past and he needs to move on. He changes Barsoom throughout his time there and for the better.
ReplyDeleteI saw that too. The death of his family scarred him, and he is very upset. As the movie goes on, he sees that the past can't change, and he has to let it go. He marries Dejah, and moves on with his life.
DeleteHave we got it all wrong? Doesn't Barsoom redeem John Carter? How so?
ReplyDeleteIt teaches John Carter that he needs a family. Barsoom redeems John Carter by showing hime that he is not in need of gold. Its like when we try to figure a problem out on our own, we need Gods help,or our family s help to solve tough problems. Thats what Barsoom did for him. Carter tried to replace his dead family with gold, Barsoom showed him that he just need communication with family.
DeleteMr. Scott's Bible Class is finished with the project.
ReplyDeleteRedemption is impossible to do on your own. God knows what to do, and how to do it. A quote from one of my favorite songs is:
ReplyDelete"...So, help my lifeless frame to breathe. And God knows I'm not dying, but I breathe now. And God knows it's the only way to heal now..."
Even though this song is a breakup song, I think it has a point that can be applied to life spiritually. God knows what's best for us, and what to do about it. He knows HE is the only way to be redeemed.
I think the experience in Barsoom changed him a lot. He stop thinking about him self once he found dejiah falling out of the plain. That's where it all changed for me
ReplyDeleteI thought at the beggining he was full of himself, only cared for himslef, nobody else mattered to him, he was only concerned about his well being, and personal wants. but as the story went on he started to see he was becoming attached to people, having close relationships, realizing other people mattered! they were living creatures, made by God, he couldnt just neglect them, and act as if the world and all its inhabitants revolved around him! he learned to care for others, to scrifice his well-being for others, and become a great leader, and a great friend as well
ReplyDeleteI agree with Zack. John Carter cut off his relationship with people after his family was killed. Once he got to Mars, he started to realize he couldn't hide anymore, and had to forget the past. He made new relationships, and saved others.
DeleteRedemption is saving someboby or something from a croupt state and restoring it. I think John did it himself by changing into a new man and forgetting about his past and looking forward
